Melrose House, Fulham is at the Bishop's Park end of Finlay Street.

It has been a nursery school for over forty years and was previously known as Cygnets, before adopting the same name as its sister school in Southfields.  Cygnets pupils are now sending their own children to Melrose House and stepping inside the 55 Finlay Street walls brings back many happy memories!

Louise Hopkins, a qualified teacher, is the headmistress.  Her children went to Melrose House and once they were at school she joined Melrose House as a member of staff in 2015.  She took over the running of the nursery in September 2020.

Melrose House is owed by Ruth Oates who is head of Melrose House, Southfields.

Her daughter, Caroline O'Gorman ran the nursery for a number of years, after completing her PGCE and MA in Education and gaining experience as a teacher at Eaton House the Manor.  She is the administrator for the nursery school as she now has own child.

About:

The nursery school operates on the ground floor of a privately owned home.  The children are split into two rooms, the Caterpillars (2 - 3 year olds) and Butterflies (3 - 4 year olds). The nursery has a purpose built, enclosed garden.

The aim of Melrose House Nursery Schools is to encourage the development of happy, confident children in a secure and stimulating environment.  Each day a range of activities is covered to enhance the intellectual, physical and social development of each child. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage which is organised into seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
  • Communication and Language;
  • Physical Development;
  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the World;
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

Whilst the majority of the learning is done through group play and fun activities, we also pride ourselves on the one:one tuition each child receives daily at Melrose House.  Individual tuition is given to each child in order that their progress is encouraged and monitored, preparing the children for their next schools.  We have excellent staff:child rates and a highly-qualified, dedicated team of staff.  One member of staff is allocated to each child to be in charge of the child's progress and learning.

Parents are welcome in the classroom at drop off and this is a good chance to talk to staff.  We also have two parent meetings a year, which is a more formal time to talk about a child's progress.

We also invite parents in to watch a whole school nativity play and we hold a sports day for everyone at Bishop's Park in the summer.  The Butterfly classes also do a Spring and Summer term assembly and parents are welcome to watch.

Places are offered a year prior to the start date and are allocated in strict date order of registration.  After this, places are given out as and when they become available.
